Worlding & Speculative Fabulation

In the sense of our annual theme ‘I’ve never seen you like this before’, we are looking for ways to find an appropriate approach in times between technology optimism and cynical doomsday mood. We want to offer spaces for what is repressed and occupy territories for what appears to be the weakest link.

By unveiling hidden beauties we want to discover that which has always been there and fabulate the colorful diversity of adequate habitats.

WILD MATTERS investigates the creations of hybrid species, unpredictable kinships, hyperactive spaces and fluid environments that are born out of the interaction between human and non human entities. Can we interface with non human beings to define another sense of self?
How to develop a new perception of self and materiality?
What is the value of manipulating and estranging bodily awareness? After all what is it that makes us human? What is the matter that is considered as human or non human?

Can we displace the notion of species hierarchy and of a single, common standard for “Man” as the measure of all things? Can we allow other species to come and gallop in? Can we tell other stories of stories?

As Donna Harraway puts it: "It matters what matters we use to think other matters with; it matters what stories we tell to tell other stories with; it matters what knots knot knots, what thoughts think thoughts, what descriptions describe descriptions, what ties tie ties, what worlds world worlds.”

This semester Wild Matters will apply the Worlding as a design method. What is meant by worlding is a particular blending of the material and the semiotic that removes the boundaries between subject and environment, or perhaps between persona and topos. The notion of 'worlding' provides a useful lens through which process of human-non-human enmeshment can be considered.

So we not only design architectures, but we world worlds, spaces of possibility and alternative realities, the origin of which is yesterday and at best replace the future. In this Speculative Fabulation, people like animals and plants are crucial for our architecture - we take the crisis as a serious boost to rethink relationships, break power, tell new stories and exchange protagonists.

We start looking for obscured places in the city but also places with a special story or places of protest (e.g. Notre Dame Paris, Gezi Park Istanbul, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Exarcheia Athens) By breaking the timeline at one point and creating a new surreal spectral zone we fictionalize a parallel world.

These places we record and examine, define possibilities of sympoietic systems and find new kinships to embody and inhabit. Everything we find in this place - objects, trees, plants, stones, machines, animals, architectures, chemical reactions, networks, systems, infrastructures, data, humans, gumans, ghosts, stories, myths, weirdoes and witches - we observe carefully, compost it and start to make a new humus for architectural fabulation.

The result is a space of unregulated relationships, a new wilderness, giving shelter to biodiversity, forgotten stories and fantastic creatures.

During the design process of our worldings we will have a couple of Workshops where we will be using interactive tools as embodied interfaces to create parallel worlds of hyperactive mixed realities. One of the workshops will be dealing with GANs General Advertisal Networks. With this tool we will mix the genes of the objects/spaces/animals and etc which we will be collecting  to create unpredictable and unexpected creations of spaces/objects/figures that were never experienced before. Later on we will bring those creations into 3D worlds and start shaping and interacting in realtime. Last but not least we will have the Late Night Belly Dance Services by Rokoko workshop where we will create and embody the kins/avatars and creations, transfer them bodily motions via motion tracking suit, bring our creations into timelines.
